Accelerating Seed Germination and Juvenile Growth of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) to Manage Climate Variability through Hydro-Priming

چکیده

Agriculture in Mali, a country Sahelian West Africa, strongly depends on rainfall and concurrently has low adaptive capacity, making it consequently one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change worldwide. Since early-season drought limits crop germination, hence growth, ultimately yield during rain-fed depending production is commonly experienced nowadays Mali. Germination establishment key crops such as staple sorghum could be improved by seed priming. The effects hydro-priming with different water sources (e.g., distilled, tap, rain, river, well water) were evaluated respectively for three priming time durations tepid e.g., at 25 °C (4, 8, 12 h) hot 70 (in contrast 10, 20, 30 min.) 2014 2015. Seed germination seedling development nine genotypes monitored. Compared non-primed treatments, significantly [p = 0.01] final percentage, rate index, total length, root vigor shoot dry weight. from wells rivers resulted significant higher (85%) development, compared other water. rate, uniformity, speed enhanced also. It argued that safe simple method effectively improve sorghum. If used fields, above promising may contribute managing early season avoid failure high variability contexts.

Seed Coating with Hydro-Absorbers as Potential Mitigation of Early Season Drought in Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench)

Climate change poses a threat to sorghum production systems by shifting the onset of the rainy season to a later date, increasing the risk of crop failure during crop establishment. The effects of drought on sorghum during seedling establishment have not been determined. Coating seeds with a water absorbing substance offers a way to buffer the seed against insufficient moisture in the surroundi...

Effect of Seed Priming on Early Development of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) and Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth

Striga hermonthica is an obligate, root parasite, that limits cereal production in sub-Saharan Africa. Successful control depends on eliminating its seed reserves in soil, thereby preventing parasitism. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of salinity on germination traits and seedling growth of sorghum (cultivar Wad Ahmed) and S. hermonthica. The experiments were conducted in...

Effect of temperature on seed setting behaviour in rabi sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L). Moench)

Pollen viability is an important parameter of yield as for as interaction of temperature with seed setting is concerned. Rabi sorghum is one of the major cereal crops after rice, wheat and maize. In sorghum seed setting is affected when the flowering period coincides with minimum temperature. In this context comparison was made with pollen fertility percentage and seed setting percentage vs min...

Seed Priming with Polyethylene Glycol Induces Physiological Changes in Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) Seedlings under Suboptimal Soil Moisture Environments

Osmopriming with PEG has potential to improve seed germination, seedling emergence, and establishment, especially under stress conditions. This research investigated germination performance, seedling establishment, and effects of osmopriming with PEG on physiology in sorghum seedlings and their association with post-priming stress tolerance under various soil moisture stress conditions. Results...

Inheritance of Resistance to Sorghum Shoot Fly, Atherigona soccata in Sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench

Sorghum production is affected by a wide array of biotic constraints, of which sorghum shoot fly, Atherigona soccata is the most important pest, which severely damages the sorghum crop during the seedling stage. Host plant resistance is one of the major components to control sorghum shoot fly, A. soccata. To understand the nature of gene action for inheritance of shoot fly resistance, we evalua...
